The Kwun Tong Promenade with a total area of over four hectares was implemented in two stages for public enjoyment of the harbourfront.

Kwun Tong Promenade (Stage 1)

The Kwun Tong Promenade (Stage 1) which was the southeastern portion of the former Kwun Tong Public Cargo Working Area (KTPCWA) has a total area of 7,340 m2. Stage 1 was opened to the public in January 2010.

The project comprises of a 200 metre-long boardwalk, a multipurpose plaza with mist, music and special lightings, a performance area and a children's play area.

Kwun Tong Promenade (Stage 2)

Following the full decommissioning of KTPCWA in December 2011, the southwestern portion of the former KTPCWA with a total area of 3.4 hectares was transformed to Kwun Tong Promenade (Stage 2) and was opened to the public in May 2015.

The project comprises a 950 metre-long boardwalk, multiple sitting-out areas, pavilions and shelters with benches, landscaped areas with multi-purpose lawn and trees, mist feature with animated lighting and music effects and a sensory garden, etc..

Design Concept

Before the redevelopment, part of the seafront served as loading and unloading area for the recycled paper industry. Stacks of recycled paper in compressed cubic blocks had been scattered all over the site. Their unstable and distorted form created a dramatic sense of dynamic instability. The design adopted the idea of “dynamic instability” and the form of the lifting cranes of the buildings within the multipurpose plaza, in acknowledgement of the contribution of the recycled paper industry towards environmental protection in Hong Kong. The use of rustic finish for steel works is also inspired by the lifting cranes on the barges.

The buildings of this project are all made of steel, glass and wire mesh materials to create a light-weight and transparent feeling. In night time, the special lightings of the multipurpose plaza will be flashed following the rhythm of the music. Together with the mist emitted from the floor of the plaza and the effect of the uplights along the boardwalk, a surrealistic and romantic atmosphere is created. In summer, the mist emitted from the floor also achieves a cooling effect.
