To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the EKEO co-organised the “City Dress-up Design Competition – Flyover Fantasy Re-run and Art Up Wong Chuk Hang” with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners, the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The Competition aims to enhance the city’s appearance and reflect the unique characteristics of the respective districts through the artistic creation of murals in Kwun Tong and Wong Chuk Hang. The competition invited teams from different professional institutes to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration.
One stream of the competition, known as "Flyover Fantasy Re-run", aimed at refreshing the image of the mural paintings on 18 of the columns of Kwun Tong Bypass at the Fly the Flyover sites created under 'Flyover Fantasy' in 2017 as well as to extend the murals to more columns to forge a stronger identity for Hoi Bun Road. The winning design "Lift Up Kowloon East" has incorporated district characteristics and artistic elements into the public space under the Kwun Tong Bypass, helping to transform Kowloon East into a unique Core Business District full of artistic creativity. The mural posters were completed in November 2022 bringing a new look to the columns at the public space underneath the bypass and beautifying the scenery of Kwun Tong Promenade.
The winning team, architect Mr Derrick LEONG and designer Ms Annie LONG, took characters from different periods and industries in Kowloon East as the design theme of the 30 sets of giant murals, and used the murals to record their work, lives and contributions to the development of Kowloon East. Members of the public can learn about the transformation of Kowloon East and discover different Hong Kong stories by viewing the murals.
