In response to the public aspiration for a wider coverage of the cycle track network for leisure and recreation purposes, the Government proposed to extend the cycle track network to about 13 km to link up various scenic spots in the Kai Tak Development (KTD). This proposal was subsequently promulgated in the 2017 Policy Address aiming to foster a bicycle-friendly environment in new development areas.
As opposed to traditional cycle tracks that are segregated from footpaths, the 13-kilometre GreenWay in the KTD adopts a shared-use concept for pedestrians and cyclists to enhance the connectivity of open spaces in the area for leisure and recreation purposes. The GreenWay will connect to various open spaces, including the Sung Wong Toi Park, Kai Tak River, Kai Tak Sports Park, Metro Park, the promenades along both sides of the former runway area, Kwun Tong Promenade, etc.
The GreenWay in KTD has been opened to the public progressively from September 2024. The remaining sections of the GreenWay will be opened progressively in alignment with the implementation programme of infrastructure projects and open spaces in the area.
